Thank you for this post. I must say, however, for clarity sake that you're mixing your fruits. px vs pt and we should toss in em. 16pt = 21px. 16px = 12pt which is of course the default websize (1em when not defined.) Pt is for print/ em should be the standard for web. I've been guilty in the past of designing "too small" and only now am I starting to size up... and you know what? A lot of the clients appreciate it.
